10.6.6 Update

Friday, January 7th, 2011

I didn’t bother to update to 10.6.5 because there was no compelling reason for me to do so…but 10.6.6 is a worthy update because of the introduction of the much-anticipated Mac App Store. This update for me is similar to 10.6.3 and 10.6.4…except I don’t have a SleepEnabler.kext because as of this writing, there isn’t one available that is compatible to 64-bit 10.6.6.

I had a minor setback when I upgraded, though: After the first reboot, the application icons are all whacked-up and I I’m greeted with this error whenever I try to launch an app:

“You cant open the application (null) because it may be damaged or incomplete”

Fortunately, the issue was not as bad as I thought and was addressed by simply rebooting into Safe Mode first, then reboot again as normal.  For us Hackint0sh users, you start with the “-x” at the command prompt.

The App Store is interesting, but it got me upset right away because Aperture 3 is available for $80 when I paid $150 a few months ago.

Macam + PS3 Eye = Awesome

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

If you’re like me, you already have a PS3 Eye when you bought the PS3 Move Bundle (because buying the game and just the Move controller doesn’t make a lot of sense when you can buy the bundle for LESS).  So what do you do with that extra PS3 Eye?  Well, my Hackint0sh doesn’t have a webcam and I’ve been meaning to get one…instead of buying yet another webcam I googled for a driver for the PS3 Eye for OS X.  Lo, and behold!  It does exist…and it works!  So I can now have video chat on my Hackint0sh without spending another dime.

iPhone 3GS Downgrading

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Today, I spent a huge chunk of my time mucking with an iPhone 3GS to be able to install a jailbroken iOS 4.1.  I used the pwnage Tool, Tiny Umbrella and whole lotta fist-shaking infront of the monitor every time a firmware install failed.

But after much persistence, I prevailed.  The iPhone owner is very happy.

Hackint0sh: 10.6.2 Update Failed?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

If you followed this guide on creating your Hackint0sh, you are probably greeted with a Kernel Panic once you update to 10.6.2.

This is because the SleepEnabler.kext–the driver that makes the Hackint0sh sleep upon inactivity–is not 10.6.2 compatible. You will need to delete the driver in order to boot properly:

  • Boot using the Leopard DVD or the Leopard Hackint0sh USB if you still have it.
  • Select the DVD/USB on boot prompt
  • Instead of continuing with the installation (duh), open a Terminal from the Utilities menu.
  • cd to /Volumes/{YourHackint0shVolume}/Extras/Extensions then delete the SleepEnabler.kext by issuing a “rm -r SleepEnabler.kext/”
  • Reboot

There is an updated SleepEnabler but I haven’t tried it yet.  I will update this post once I have. Update: the 10.6.2-friendly SleepEnabler works!

Introduction

As promised to my ever-shrinking blog readership, here is my small contribution to the Hackint0sh community: building your own Hackint0sh HOWTO.

Why is My Blog’s RSS Turned into Spam in Google Reader?

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

I’ve had this problem for a long while now and ignored it until recently, when the problem didn’t go away upon upgrading to the latest WordPress.  After googling and reading this thread, I’ve found that I wasn’t alone, and a solution is at hand (read the post by “Today”).

It’s quite unnerving though that some hax0r got into my site and was able to mess with it.
