Can you use Synergy to have the desktop mouse control the cursor of a duplicate of the laptop screen as opposed to an extention of its screen. I've been trying but can't seem to figure it out.

yes that's true for MaxiVista's &quot;remote control&quot; mode whereby you are actually MaxiVista as a KVM.  

Here it's not exactly like that (I just realized the title is kinda misleading...).  I use MaxiVista to extend the display on my desktop (which it does natively) and then use the DESKTOP's mouse and keyboard to control the whole setup (which, AFAIK, cannot be done by MaxiVista...i'd love to be proven wrong) using Synergy.

I also use MaxiVista and find it MUCH easier to use and to configure.
