Who’s Gonna Win the Console War?

You’ve probably heard of a thousand takes on this question.  Here’s mine, and why I’m right and the ones who oppose are wrong: Nintendo is going to win the console war this generation.

Sure, Nintendo doesn’t have the most powerful console in terms of CPU and Graphics capabilities…heck, they don’t even have support for HDTVs.  While I believe that the Revolution will not be too far behind in terms of CPU/Graphics specs, they will manage to actually EARN money from selling the console…as opposed to Microsoft/Sony who LOSE money for each console sold, and rape consumers by charging a fortune on software…which brings me to my next point:

Nintendo can afford to sell software at a lower price point.  Imagine a kick-ass game available on both Rev and, say, PS3.  PS3 costs $10 more…I don’t know about you, but prettier graphics isn’t worth $10 more to me.

So, in summary so far: Nintendo will win because of price point.  Videogame fanboys everywhere would agree, cost would affect you next-generation console purchase this time.  Because unlike in the past, you can’t afford all three.  Well, at least for me.  With the rumored price point of PS3 going for as high as $700…ugh!  I can’t even go on…

Next point: Japan loathes the 360.  The 360s are being sold there at less than $200 because they just won’t sell.  If the Japs don’t like the 360, why would they build games for it?  Let’s get real: the best games come from Japan.

On a related note: Nintendo DS.  Japan has just recovered from the Nintendo DS backlog and it’s no secret that Nintendo has plans to integrate the handheld with the console.  It would only take one killer app (probably something to do with Nintendogs and/or Pokemon), and the Revolution instantly will have the same user base as the DS, given the pricepoint…at least in Japan.

Notice that I didn’t even mention the Rev controller.  To be quite honest I’m still skeptical with the technology, but not shouldn’t affect the console’s position in the next gen race even if the controller sucked.   Why?  because the GameCube controller will be compatible with the Revolution; hey could still be like the other two competitors.  That said, if the controller is a success, then it would only make the Revolution more successful in dominating the next-gen war.

[…] Last April, I made a bold prediction that the Nintendo Wii (code-named “Revolution” back then) will win this generation of console war.  I’m still 100% behind that.  I’m going to get my Wii pre-order tomorrow and will post my first impressions as soon as i clean up my pants after creamed them.
